POSTAL HOT TOPICS
- Is mail delivery on the way out?
  Editorial: Cincinnati.Com
Facing rising costs, greater competition and lessening demand, the Postal Service may be just months away from historic changes in the way it operates, the Associated Press reported Friday. Mail delivery may be cut to three times a week or once a week, or recipients may have to go to the post office to pick it up - or pay extra for delivery. - NALC: Tentative agreement reached on new contract
The NALC reached tentative agreement today with the USPS on a new five-year National Agreement for all 222,000 city delivery letter carriers throughout the nation. The pact, which includes new limits on contracting out of city letter carrier work along with provisions covering wages, benefits, and working conditions, will be submitted to the NALC membership for rank-and-file ratification. - CONTRACTED DELIVERY ALIVE AND WELL UNDER NEW
  NALC CONTRACT
- Editorial by Rick Owens
The NALC recently announced that a tentative agreement has been reached with USPS. The NALC site states "The proposed contract includes new limits on contracting out of city letter carrier work in more than 3,000 city delivery installations." It is my personal opinion that carriers nationwide should immediately demand that either the NALC or USPS, or both, provide them with a complete list of these delivery installations BEFORE ratification is considered. - How, or if, you get your mail could change (a lot)
  Reader comments
"Maybe we can get rid of the U.S. Postal Service? What do we get in our mail that justifies keeping it?" And from the Northwest Herald ...more comments: "Maybe the Postal Service should cut back on $50,000 salaries, five-week vacations, too many paid holidays, matching retirement contributions, super health care insurance and life insurance plans that double and triple an employee's salary, etc. Also, cut back on the number of less-than-productive employees who function at a reduced capacity, due to alleged 'work-related' injuries." - Groups seek end to USPS monopoly on mailboxes
  Federal Times
A group of taxpayer and consumer advocates are calling for an end to the U.S. Postal Service’s monopoly on mailboxes. In response to a Federal Trade Commission request for comment in the May 1 Federal Register, the group questions a rule that bars putting letters or packages in mailboxes without paying a fee to the Postal Service. -

- Letter carrier faked dog bite claim for profit, investigators say: letter carrier was arrested Friday in Freedom, a town near Watsonville, following a month-long investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General into allegations that she tried to extort hundreds of dollars from one of her customers. -
