- Mail fraud
  Opinion - Pitt-Tribune
As an unwilling and lifelong "customer" of the U.S. Postal Service, I feel more than qualified to respond to letter writer William Burrus of the American Postal Workers Union and his bizarre defense of his federally protected racket -- oops ... I mean profession ("Union mail works," March 7 and PghTrib.com). "Earning" artificially inflated wages for unskilled labor that is not subject to market forces, competitive pressures or any accountability is nothing to brag about. -

- Post Office Strikes!Post Office Strike!
On this date in 1970 at 12:05am the U.S. postal strike began. The strike involved approximately 152,000 postal employees in 671 locations. The U.S. Army was ordered to deliver the mail by President Richard Nixon.

Later that year the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 gave birth to the United States Postal Service and the Post Office Department was gone forever. -

- Beaverton PM says contract letter carriers just as
  good as unionized carriers

This postmaster says: "Along with USPS employees, our contractors’ dedication to excellence is helping us continue to improve the level of service we provide to our customers. Contractors already deliver mail in several communities in the metropolitan area, elsewhere in the state and throughout the nation. They are required to provide the same service – and do it just as well – as unionized USPS employees." -
